The STAR program is a tax relief program for the primary residences of New York residents from the burden of school district taxes. Essentially the program allows you to reduce the taxable value of your property. The difference is then covered by the state, so it is a state subsidy.
Homeowners who make under $500,000 can enroll in Basic STAR, and those over the age of 65 who earn less than $81,900 are eligible for Enhanced STAR. Note that these numbers may be adjusted over time so check with the city or state. New York City residents must go to the NYC Dept of Finance. The estimated benefit is a savings of $280 for Basic, $560 for Enhanced.
